In the next 10 years, Australia’s population is set to grow by 4 million people – with Victoria alone projected to welcome 1.2 million new residents, accounting for 30% of the nation’s total growth.
This surge in population underscores the urgent need for increased housing supply – a priority the Victorian Government is currently addressing. As the state’s population grows, key strategies – such as fast-tracking developments, investing in infrastructure, unlocking surplus land, and creating vibrant activity centres near education, employment and essential services – are being rolled out to meet growing demand. As Victoria grows towards 9 million people by 2040, housing demand will continue in parallel. Mark McCrindle, Futurist, Demographer and Principal at McCrindle Research says that while affordability will be a key theme in the decade ahead, location, lifestyle and proximity to work will remain strong.
